About the Book

Anticipating contemporary deconstructive readings of philosophical texts, Georg Simmel pits the two German masters of philosophy of life against each other in a play of opposition and supplementation. This first English translation of Simmel's work includes an extensive introduction, providing the reader with ready access to the text by mapping its discursive strategies.

Reviews

"Will not only contribute to the understanding of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche but . . . to the revision of current Simmel interpretations."--Michael Kaern, president, The Georg Simmel Foundation, Inc.

"Sociologists . . . who wish to grasp the breadth and depth of Simmel, and to gain another perspective on modernism, will find this book indispensable." --Arthur W. Frank, Symbolic Interaction

"This fine translation should enhance the burgeoning interest in Simmel's thought . . . [and] should appeal to those interested in the intellectual history of ideas both in the humanities and the social sciences."--Richard Busse, Religious Studies Review
