Under These Same Stars, a new film inspired by Carl J. Ekberg’s recent University of Illinois Press book Stealing Indian Women: Native Slavery in the Illinois Country, is premiering in Ste Genevieve, Missouri, on October 25.

From the film’s website:
“Based on a true story from 1773 and shot in the historic homes of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, in Cahokia, Illinois, and at rural locations across Southern Illinois, Under These Same Stars tells a tale of Céladon, a mixed race hunter and his struggles with love, loss, and his dual life in town and in the Ozark wilderness. This is set in a time of Native and Black slavery and French, Spanish and English colonial rule along the central Mississippi Valley.”

University press book controversy

Inside Higher Ed has a piece this morning on SUNY Press taking over publication rights for Black Elk Speaks from University of Nebraska Press.

“For most university presses, a book that sells a million copies is a rarity. When that book relates to the history of the region in which the university is located and a much-loved literary figure in the state, well, that would be almost too good to be true.”

The Southern Illinoisan reported over the weekend that Under These Same Stars, an adaptation of Carl Ekberg’s recent book Stealing Indian Women, is being filmed in Alto Pass, Illinois.

“Carl Ekberg, the uncle of the film’s director Dan Johnson of Alto Pass and brother of producer Anne Johnson of St. Louis, spent years researching the history in St. Genevieve, New Orleans and Seville, Spain.”

Elizabeth Cook-Lynn visits the University of Illinois

Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, author of the new book New Indians, Old Wars, will speak at the University of Illinois on November 6, 2007, at a lecture sponsored by the Native American House. Prior to the speech, Cook-Lynn will be interviewed live on Champaign-Urbana’s NPR station, WILL AM 580.
