Drink Savvy, New Feminist Technology by Linda Layne

David Banks, a Ph.D. student in Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer who took my course on gender, science, and technology a number of years ago, keeps his eyes peeled for feminist technologies. Recently he sent me the link to an article published August 19, 2013 in MS Magazine blog by Natasha Turner “Could Cups and Straws Prevent Date Rape?”

In it she describes a new company DrinkSavvy, which is “developing cups, glasses and straws that change color at the detection of GHB, ketamine and rohypnol, three common invisible drugs used in drink spiking. Six respondents to the blog post were enthusiastic but raised questions of affordability and of treating the symptom not the cause.
