5 reasons to visit us at OAH

DanielsS16If you are headed to the Organization of American Historians Annual Meeting in Providence, Rhode Island during April 7-9 there are a few things you’ll want to be on the lookout for courtesy of your friends at UIP.

1) Given the city’s storied working class history, Providence presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase our outstanding list in labor studies. Among the new titles we’ll be featuring at the conference exhibit are Jacob Remes’s Disaster Citizenship, which profiles port city conflagrations just up the coast, at Salem, Mass, and in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Manhood on the Line, Stephen Meyer’s long-awaited study of masculinity on the factory floor; and two forays into integrating working class and religious history, Elizabeth and Ken Fones-Wolf’s Struggle for the South of the Postwar South and a new edited volume, The Pew and the Picket Line.

2) A visit to the UIP booth is also a great opportunity to learn about the new volume in the Common Threads e-book series, Immigrant Identity and the Politics of Citizenship presents fourteen articles pulled from the archives of the Journal of American Ethnic History. Editor John Bukowczyk has selected the articles to discuss the divisions and hierarchies that immigrants to the United States must navigate and the cultural and political atmospheres they encounter while doing so. Drawing on scholarship of ethnic groups from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe, the writers illuminate the journey from mistrusted “Other” to welcome citizen. Meet Alexa Colella to ask her about Common Threads.

3) The OAH marks the debut of the second volume of Roger Daniels’s magnificent biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt, chronicling the wartime presidency. Join us for a wine reception celebrating the author and this milestone publication on Friday, April 8, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the UIP exhibit booth, #430.

4) This conference also gives historians a chance to meet our new editor, James Engelhardt. Coming to Illinois from the University Press of Alaska, James will be overseeing our history titles and the series Working Class in American History, Disability Histories, Studies of World Migrations, and History of Emotions. Please stop by and say hello!

5) And while you’re at the our booth take advantage of the conference discount of up to 40% off with free shipping.*
