Getting to know Champaign-Urbana, Part 5

Champaign’s Assembly Hall is a most endangered historic place, reports the Chicago Tribune. I drive past this building every day on my way home from work and have enjoyed many an Illini basketball game and mainstream “rock” concert inside; Peter Gabriel (not as good as the Uptown/Chicago show on his 3rd album tour), Def Leppard (rawk), Heart (Barracuda, thank you), Dolly Parton (she didn’t sing Jolene!), Kiss (Ace really sleepwalked through this one), Elton John (top row of “C” not the best seat for a solo show), Indigo Girls, The Go Gos, Black Crowes, MC Hammer (with Vanilla Ice ice, baby!), Culture Club, Prince.

Do you have a favorite Assembly Hall event? I think mine is the 2002 Illinois-North Carolina basketball game that featured freshmen Deron Williams, Dee Brown, James Augustine, Sean May, Raymond Felton, and Rashad McCants.
