Studs Terkel

I was out of town for the weekend, and so did not see the news that Studs Terkel died until this morning. About five years ago I saw him engaged in one of his famous interview/conversations with Rick Kogan at the Harold Washington Library during Printers Row. Not being a native Chicagoan, and too young to have seen his TV show, the experience gave me an immediate view into the Depression-through-McCarthy era completely different from the ones presented by my much more conservative family members. Oh, and he was also incredibly prolific. He contributed forewords and other written pieces to many University of Illinois Press books over the years, most recently, Tales of a Theatrical Guru, by Danny Newman.
