Serve It Up with Oscar!

deleytoSunday night, Mexican filmmaker and auteur Alejandro González Iñárritu took home the Academy Award for Best Director, for his film The Revenant.

The Revenant first went into production in 2001. Like many films, it took a long journey through the Hollywood sausage factory before photography began in 2014. During that time, Iñárritu created one of the most celebrated careers in contemporary cinema, from 2003’s 21 Grams through Babel, Biutiful, and the much-awarded Birdman. With Best Director nods for Birdman and The Revenant, Iñárritu became the first director to win the award back-to-back since 1950.

Want to know more about this giant in our midst? Celestino Deleyto and María del Mar Azcona explore Iñárritu’s career in the UIP release Alejandro González Iñárritu. Part of our celebrated Contemporary Film Directors series, the book explores Iñárritu’s themes, powerful visual style, and the idiosyncratic storytelling structure that makes whatever he does feel like an epic. Those wanting to get beyond the post-Oscar boilerplate can hear from the man himself as the authors interview Iñárritu on the ideas and subject matter driving his early works.
