A new journal has joined University of Illinois Press! Please join us in welcoming the Journal of the Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi Society. We are pleased to announce that this distinguished journal will appear twice each year under the editorship of Professor Mukhtar Ali (University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign).
The Journal of the Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi Society is a peer-reviewed scholarly publication dedicated to the study of the life, thought, and legacy of the great Andalusian mystic Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi (1165–1240). Published biannually on behalf of the Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi Society, it serves as an international forum for rigorous academic research on Ibn ‘Arabi’s writings and their intellectual, spiritual, and historical contexts. The journal welcomes original research articles, critical editions and translations of primary texts, annotated studies of manuscripts, book reviews, review essays, and occasional thematic symposia. Particular attention is given to contributions that advance philological, historical, philosophical, theological, and comparative approaches to Ibn ‘Arabi and the broader Akbarian tradition.
“The Journal of the Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi Society joins our robust list of philosophy and religion journals,” says Jeff McArdle, Journals Manager at University of Illinois Press. “We look forward to supporting the journal’s editorial team and contributors, as well as the Society, by ensuring high-quality production support and post-publication visibility.”
Dr. Mukhtar Ali, Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, has served as editor since Volume 75. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on Sufism, Islamic philosophy, and ethics, with particular attention to Arabic and Persian intellectual traditions and the development of metaphysical thought in the Islamic world. His works include Inscriptions of Wisdom: The Sufism of Ibn al-‘Arabi in the Mirror of Jami and Philosophical Sufism: An Introduction to the School of Ibn al-‘Arabi, along with numerous articles on Islamic metaphysics and the Akbarian tradition.
“Working with University of Illinois Press provides access to established editorial and production expertise that will help the journal evolve and better serve its authors and readers,” says Ali. “We are excited about the opportunities this partnership creates to expand our international readership and strengthen the journal’s role within the field.”
The most recent issue, Volume 77, features three articles: “The World, Man and Ritual Prayer according to Ibn al-‘Arabi” by Sophie Tyser, “Akbarian Qur’anic Hermeneutics in Pre-Modern Javanese Literature” by Nur Ahmad, and “Ibn ‘Arabi and the Categories” by Denis Gril, along with a review of the book Love in the Teachings of Ibn ‘Arabi.
