Cleve Francis, author of Do My Heart Good: My Odyssey Through Country Music, Medicine, and History, answers questions about his new book, co-published with Country Music Foundation Press.

Q: Why did you decide to write this book?
This book was written to inspire others who choose to take this type of journey. Starting out with just a dream and refusal to accept my fate, I set on a journey from Jim Crow, the Civil Right Movement and the Vietnam war. The challenge of race was for ever present but I held to my goals and met some very interesting people along the way. The role of music and medicine in my life was significant. I always tried to break down barriers that inhibit potential and growth. I was successful and wanted to let others know of a path. I had taken the classic hero’s journey and has gained wisdom and wanted to pass it own.
Q: What is the most interesting discovery you made while researching and writing your book?
I was amazed at how improbable my overcoming the challenges were. I admired the young Cleve Francis who was not afraid. He learned to dance with danger and fear but never allowed them to take the lead. I was amazed at how I was able to bring back to life many of the people in my journey that had passed on. Now I will be able to let others know them as well. I was also amazed at the role religion played in my journey.
Most of all, I gained another appreciation of the role of my mother in my life.
Q: What myths do you hope your book will dispel or what do you hope your book will help readers unlearn?
Poverty and circumstances of birth do not determine the total arc of one’s life. Diversity is a good thing.
Q: Which part of the publishing process did you find the most interesting?
It all starts with a good story. To tell a good story, one had to be honest as possible and trust the readers on identify themselves in your story. As a first time author, I am amazed how coordinated many people and departments must be to produce a successful book.
Q: What is your advice to scholars/authors who want to take on a similar project?
Believe in your story and feel strongly that your telling will make the world better.
Q: What do you like to read/watch/or listen to for fun?
I like stories told in the first person. I watch action movies and love stories. I also love sports (tennis and football).
I love vintage folk music (60s) and enjoy listening to my own music (brings me back to the times when it was recorded and my interpretation of the moment).
