When Bell I. Wiley reviewed Cities and Camps of the Confederate States for the Civil War Book Club in 1958, he commended its style as "simple, straightforward, and engaging."
Further, he said, "It contains fascinating and revealing details about prices, food, travel, manufacturing, blockade-running, and the organization and equipment of the armies. Of especial value is the full comment on life in Southern towns and cities."
An account by an English-born Scotsman of his visit to the Confederacy during the Civil War, the book originally was published in part in Blackwood's Magazine, appearing in its entirety only after Lee's surrender. This Press's edition was published in 1958, featuring an introduction and annotations by Richard Barksdale Harwell, well known as the author or editor of a variety of works in Civil War and other history. Included by David J. Eicher in The Civil War in Books as among the 1,100 best books on the Civil War, the volume is now available for the first time in a paperback edition.
