Below are snippets of an e-mail conversation I recently had with a philosophy journal author regarding the copyedited version of his article.
Author: Here are my responses regarding the editorial corrections.
I hope I responded to everything.
I suspect that at the entrance of heaven one will be given a test on the use of “which” vs. “that” to determine entry. I am lost.
Me: Thanks for your reply. I’ll look over the queries from the copyeditor and see if you’ve answered everything.
Author: Please extend my thanks to the copyeditor for doing such a good job and slogging through all that.
Me: I will indeed. And just to warn you, I’ll be including a “which” vs. “that” quiz when I send out the proofs of your article.
Author: I believe that is called “which-hunting.”
End scene.
