Happy birthday to filmmaker Jacques Rivette

French film director Jacques Rivette was born on March 1, 1928.

A member of the French New Wave, alongside François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard, Rivette is best known for his films Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974) and La Belle Noiseuse (1991).

In her Contemporary Film Directors series book Jacques Rivette author Mary M. Wiles writes:

Rivette does not seek to theatricalize cinema, transforming it into a lesser descendant of theater; rather, as film theorist Jacques Aumont affirms, he permists cinema to follow its dramatic inclination, while paradoxically placing this on display (“Patron” 234). Rivette uses theater to assist him in achieving what he believes to be cinema’s true vocation—to encounter the real.
