Our Roots Run Deep is a 2014 Silver Winner in Journalism/Investigative Reporting in the Nautilus Book Awards. The Nautilus Book Awards promote print books that inspire and connect our lives as individuals, communities, and global citizens.
In addition, the book was a runner-up in the general nonfiction category in the Green Book Festival. The festival honors books that contribute to greater understanding, respect for, and positive action on the changing worldwide environment.
In Our Roots Run Deep as Ironweed, sociologist Bell presents the voices of twelve Central Appalachian women, environmental justice activists fighting against mountaintop removal mining and its devastating effects on public health, regional ecology, and community well-being.
