Jarod Roll, author of the new book Spirit of Rebellion: Labor and Religion in the New Cotton South, attended this year’s annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians the same week that Spirit of Rebellion arrived from the printer. The book documents an alternative tradition of American protest by linking working-class political movements to grassroots religious revivals.
