On February 1, 2010, we published the first English translation of Heide Schlüpmann’s book The Uncanny Gaze: The Drama of Early German Cinema, which was translated by Inga Pollmann. The book (Unheimlichkeit des Blicks: Das Drama des Frühen deutschen Kinos in German) is a feminist examination of German cinema and Germany in the sociopolitical context of Wilhelmine society.
Noah Isenberg, writing in the Times Literary Supplement, approves:
“Finally … available to an English-speaking audience. . . . Students and scholars now have the chance to learn from the scrupulous research and profound analytical rigour that characterize this first-rate work.”
