Brown v. Board of Education turns 60

On May 17, 1954 the United States Supreme Court handed down a ruling that “separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.” This was the landmark ruling on Brown v. Board of Education which changed struck a major blow against practices of segregation.

The UIP book Remembering Brown at Fifty was inspired by those who reflected on the landmark decision ten years ago.

Several authors describe their personal roles in the Brown case or similar cases. The relevance of the Brown decision in the contributors’ lives or work in education and civil rights, carries on not only today, ten year later, but reverberates beyond the generations that lived in the immediate wake of this important mark in civil rights history.
