For Sale: “Uncorrected Advance Proof Not for Resale”

One of our forthcoming books recently popped up on ebay.  In mid-July, I shipped advance copies of Crowe on the Banjo: The Music Life of J.D. Crowe (September 2011) to a variety of trade magazines, music magazines, Kentucky publications, and freelance writers. One of  those recipients is selling it, or passed it along to someone else who is selling it.

I understand that unsolicited review copies are often traded for store credit or sold. However, it’s frustrating when it happens before publication.

The last time this happened (different book, different author), the author purchased the advance copy for his own collection. That’s not how this publishing thing is supposed to work…
