Norman Johnston, author of the University of Illinois Press book Forms of Constraint: A History of Prison Architecture, is quoted in a recent New York Times story on the facility in San Quentin.

“People want to know what’s behind the wall,” Professor Johnston said. “There’s a certain morbid curiosity about prisons, just as there is with automobile wrecks.”
