There is a new journal at the University of Illinois Press! We’re happy to announce that we will be publishing issues of Notes: The Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association in September, December, March, and June moving forward.
Notes: The Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association, is regarded as the foremost scholarly journal for music libraries and librarianship. Since 1931, Notes has presented interesting, informative, and well-written articles on music librarianship, music bibliography, the music trade, discography, and certain aspects of music history. Each quarterly issue offers critical reviews of significant books and printed music, as well as columns providing complete bibliographic citations for new books, music, and music publishers’ catalogs.
“We are very excited to collaborate with the Music Library Association to publish Notes. Music scholarship is a strength of our Press, in both the books we publish and within journals where Notes will join five other excellent music journals,” says Jeff McArdle, Journals Manager at the University of Illinois Press. “We look forward to working with the Notes editorial team, contributors, and the MLA to maintain the high quality of the journal’s scholarship.”
Jonathan Sauceda has been the editor of Notes since Volume 77, Number 2, published in December 2020. He is the Associate Dean and Head of the Sibley Music Library, as well as an Associate Professor of Musicology, at the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music. Dr. Sauceda’s teaching and research interests include Latin American popular and art musics and the music information ecosystem.

The most recent issue of Notes, Volume82, Number 4, features two articles: “On Library Closing Music: Could It Be a Way to Promote Library Music Resources and Liberal Arts Education?” by Wang Kai and “How I Use a Drawing Exercise to Introduce the Topic of Researching Composers from Marginalized Communities in a Graduate Level Music Course” by Kristin Heath, along with a variety of valuable book reviews. The latest issues of Notes: The Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association are currently available on Project MUSE and will soon join other University of Illinois Press journals on the Scholarly Publishing Collective. For back content, JSTOR contains issues all the way from Volume 1 in 1934 up until 3 years ago (in a moving wall).
