Submissions

Call for Proposals

Notes welcomes submissions of interesting, informative, and well-written articles on music librarianship, music bibliography, the music trade, and discography, and on certain aspects of music history.

Preliminary ideas and manuscripts related to the above topics are welcome at any time and should be directed to the editor, Jonathan Sauceda.

Submission of articles

Manuscript should be submitted as .DOCX files to the editor, Jonathan Sauceda, at jsauceda@esm.rochester.edu and:

• appear double spaced throughout with 1½" margins on 8½" x 11" paper
• employ Times New Roman 12 point
• have numbered pages
• conform to United States English standards and usage
• contain a brief author note as the first (unnumbered) note
• include an abstract, 250 words or less, at the end of the article
• feature charts, tables, illustrations (JPG or TIFF format), and legends/captions as separate documents

Review process

Manuscripts are first read by the editor for general suitability. They are then sent to one or more readers for further review and comment using a double-blind review process. Once a decision has been reached, the editor will tell the author whether the paper is accepted for publication and, if so, under what conditions. All accepted manuscripts are edited to insure clarity of presentation and consistency of style.

Illustrations and permissions

Illustrations should be submitted electronically at size in JPG or TIFF format. When fonts are part of the image, include both screen and printer versions of fonts. Fonts must be PostScript, not TrueType.

Scans should be 1)  300 dpi for grayscale images or 2) 1200 dpi for line art.

Legends should be double spaced on a separate page accompanying the illustrations.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reprint illustrations, examples, song texts, and similar material. All necessary credits and acknowledgments should be included in the legends.

Verification

The accuracy of citations, including names, titles, dates, page numbers, and quotations, is the responsibility of the author. All information should be carefully verified before a contribution is submitted.

Style

Notes follows The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition, (CMS) as well as the ever-evolving Notes Style Sheet.

Citations should conform to the notes-bibliography system described in CMS chapter 14.

Musicians' names follow the form and spelling used in Library of Congress Authorities. Exceptions are listed under "Words, Names, and Phrases" in the Notes Style Sheet.

Other words are spelled according to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition.

Notes does not allow masculine pronouns to be applied generically (nor are "he/she," "his or her," and similar constructions accepted).

For pitch designations, use the system: C2C1C c c1c2c3, with middle C as c.

Reviews

Those wishing to review music, books on music, or periodicals, or to write discographic essays, are invited to send a curriculum vitae and a statement delineating special interests and competence to the appropriate editors. Unsolicited reviews are not accepted. Manuscript copy for reviews should conform to the guidelines specified by each review editor. Reviews are edited for style and are generally not returned for their authors' approval prior to publication.
