Simine Short on crazy gliders, Octave Chanute, and the early days of flight

Simine Short, author of the perennial UIP favorite Locomotive to Aeromotive, recently participated in a short documentary on the daring young people and their gliders in the early days of flight. The film focuses in particular on glider experiments at the Indiana Dunes, a popular Chicago area getaway place that offered lots of sand and walk away-able landings for the pilots. In addition to aviation and Indiana history, the doc offers fantastic photos of the trippy multi-winged flying machines used by these enthusiasts. It also offers the fascinating story of how pioneer Octave Chanute refined what seemed like outlandish ideas into workable designs that, in time, influenced the Wright Brothers and many others.
