Welcoming New Journal of Finnish Studies Co-Editor: Anne Mäntynen

Join us in welcoming Anne Mäntynen, the new co-editor of Journal of Finnish Studies! Her first issue of the Journal working alongside co-editor Thomas A. DuBois was Vol. 28, Iss. 2.

Dr. Anne Mäntynen is a professor of Non-fiction Studies in the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian, and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Helsinki. She is also the head of the Master of Arts program in Finnish language and fenno-ugrian languages and cultures. Anne has published scholarship in many forms throughout the years, with her most recent publications being “Studying Language, Producing Knowledge. An Introduction to Discourse Analysis,” a book co-written with Sari Pietikäinen; “Tietokirjallisuuden lajit ja rajat, a book that she co-edited; and “Tiedejulkaisijat ja tutkijat kielivalintojen ristipaineessa,” a forthcoming article she co-wrote with Mari Honko, to be published in Virittäjä.

“I’m very excited and very pleased, about working with Tom as a co-editor, and being a co-editor of the Journal,” says Anne, in our recent podcast episode interviewing her and Tom. “I think one of the most important aims, and maybe challenges, that we have is to modernize the review and editing processes now that we have the technology at the Press. And I do have experience using those. We are trying to make most of the Scholastica system to help both writers and reviewers in their work, as well as ourselves. But I’m really excited. I’m just waiting to get things rolling.”

Both Anne and Tom also went on to say that, as editors, they hoped to see more articles focused on “research on reading and literacy” in Finland submitted to the Journal, as well as book reviews and work by early career scholars, especially Finnish PhD students.

“We really welcome those PhD student articles into the Journal,” says Tom. “I always feel that a lot of times, earlier-career scholars are really worried about what they’re going to get as feedback and putting their stuff out is something that they’re a little bit anxious about, but the feedback that you get from a journal review is some of the most valuable input you can have on your work possible.”

Dr. Thomas DuBois has been an editor or co-editor of the Journal since Vol. 25, Iss. 1, published in Spring-Summer 2022. He is the Halls-Bascom Professor of Scandinavian Studies, Folklore, and Religious Studies in the Department of German, Nordic, and Slavic+ at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Thomas has published several books, most recently Sámi Media and Indigenous Agency in the Arctic North, co-authored with Coppélie Cocq; Songs of the Finnish Migration: A Bilingual Anthology, based on the anthology, co-edited with B. Marcus Cederström, and Sacred to the Touch: Nordic and Baltic Religious Wood Carving.
