“African or American?” wins award

Alexander, has been awarded the Cheikh Anta Diop Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Field of Africana Studies by the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS).

The book chronicles the growth and development of black activism in New York from the formation of the first black organization, the African Society, in 1784 to the eve of the Civil War in 1861.
