Beauty Shop Politics: African American Women’s Activism in the Beauty Industry by Tiffany Gill was awarded the Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Book Award for best publication from the Association of Black Women Historians. The award will be bestowed at the ABWH luncheon in Raleigh, NC on October 2, 2010 as part of the ASALH annual meeting.
Beauty Shop Politics examines how black beauticians in the Jim Crow era parlayed their economic independence and access to a public community space into platforms for activism.
