Happy birthday Anna Howard Shaw

Dr. Anna Howard Shaw was born on February 14, 1847.

A leader of the women’s suffrage movement, Shaw was also a physician and one of the first ordained female Methodist ministers in the United States.

Acknowledged by her contemporaries as the most outstanding woman suffrage orator of her time, Anna Howard Shaw is the subject of a forthcoming UIP book written by Trisha Franzen.

Anna Howard Shaw: The Work of Woman Suffrage, presents the case that Anna Howard Shaw deserves to be regarded alongside Susan B. Anthony and Clara Barton as a change agent who fought for universal suffrage.

In the book, Franzen questions why historians know little about Shaw and why much of what they believe about Shaw, to include some controversial years as president of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA), hasn’t stood up to scholarly scrutiny.
