New books debut at ASALH

Illinois Press staff and authors had a great time at the 98th Annual Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) Convention held from October 2-6, 2013 in Jacksonville, Florida.

At the conference were a number of UIP authors including Elizabeth Schlabach, whose new book Along The Streets of Bronzeville which will be published on October 28th.  The book examines the vibrant period of African American creativity, activism, and scholarship on the South Side Chicago from the 1920s to the 1960s.

 

Also at the conference was John Matthew Smith, who signed copies of his book The Sons of Westwood.  The book covers the John Wooden era of UCLA basketball and shines a light on the championship teams that came of age in civil rights era.
