2026 Journals Q3 UPdate

Two journal issues (Jazz & Culture and Notes) in front of a background showing spines of many other journals.

Welcome to Q3 and a quick look back at all that we celebrated July to September this year. Most notably, we introduced Notes: The Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association. Notes is regarded as the foremost scholarly journal for music libraries and librarianship. Since 1931, Notes has presented interesting, informative, and well-written articles on music librarianship, music bibliography, the music trade, discography, and certain aspects of music history. Each quarterly issue offers critical reviews of significant books and printed music, as well as columns providing complete bibliographic citations for new books, music, and music publishers’ catalogs. Jonathan Sauceda has been the editor of Notes since Volume 77, Number 2, published in December 2020. Check out the latest issues on Project Muse!

Plus, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education has announced the winners of the 2023 & 2024 Outstanding Dissertation Awards.

There’s so much more to share, from special issues to blogs to popular articles, and even a little sneak peek at what’s next for UIP Journals.

Blogs

We started Q3 with a celebration of America250, highlighting our state history journals, and the celebration isn’t over yet! Keep an eye out for a new podcast episode featuring Thomas Balcerski, the editor of Connecticut History Review, coming out soon. In the meantime, did you read our blog post on the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society special America250 issue and see our video about the Utah Historical Society’s project “The Peoples of Utah” and the related special issues of Utah Historical Quarterly?

Did you see the announcement of the Journal of Film and Video 2026-2027 reading list? Every three months there is a free to read article. For October 1 to December 31, 2026, it’s “Roasting Mulan: Chinese Cultural Confidence and Tucao Video Remixes on Bilibili” by Pengnan Hu.

We announced a new editor of the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association, Dr. Christian McWhirter. A fun fact: rather than just being a new editor, he is actually a returning editor, having previously edited the journal from 2013 to 2018. With his return, he has an open call for papers, so if you’ve thought about submitting your work in the past, now may be the time!

Speaking of submitting to our journals, Journal of Finnish Studies has also launched a call for papers. To inspire you, there are four highlighted free to read articles through the end of November 2026.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to intern with the University of Illinois Press? Diana Towner walks you through her experience as the “‘Round the Press” intern, highlighting an article from Journal of Appalachian Studiesand a special issue of Journal of American Folklore that caught her attention during her time with the Journals Department.

Shh… We’re not quite ready to share all of the details, but we have it on good authority that two new journals are about to join our ranks: stay tuned for more information on Slavic & East European Journal and Fontes Artis Musicae!

October is a big month for cultural studies, with Polish American Heritage Month and Italian American Heritage Month, and we’ve got you covered with a set of articles to help you celebrate both. You can also check out our reading list of books and articles for LGBTQ+ History Month.

Coming up November 9-13 is University Press Week, hosted by the Association of University Presses. We’ll be celebrating with a week of special themed blog posts, so be sure to stop by virtually to check it out.
