Now considered possibly Illinois' greatest poet, Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) saw himself as a bard of the working class. Carl Sandburg, born in Galesburg, Illinois, won the Pulitzer Prize for Complete Poems (1950). John E. Hallwas, professor of English at Western Illinois University, is the editor of Illinois Literature: The Nineteenth Century.
