What journalists are saying about Ray Long’s The House That Madigan Built: The Record Run of Illinois’ Velvet Hammer, now available in paperback:
“An amazingly timely book that puts into perspective the historic events of last week — the federal indictment of the most powerful figure in Illinois politics.”
—Shia Kapos, Politico
“Long’s well-written and eye-opening book shows how Madigan, starting as just another patronage worker himself, carefully acquired and expanded the power for which he became famous to some and infamous to others.”
—Jim Dey, News-Gazette

The History of Media and Communication series (previously named the History of Communication series) seeks books that emphasize technology and infrastructure, the politics of social differences and intersectionality, environmental issues, globalization, and labor as they relate to media and communication. The series encourages greater attention to transnational, postcolonial, and decolonial studies through an historical lens. The goal is to develop original, rigorous, and path breaking books that bring forth the complex pasts of media and communication and that link to contemporary life and near futures.
