About the Book

Bonnie Lyons and Bill Oliver bring readers twelve wide-ranging interviews with the crème de la crème of late twentieth-century fiction authors. Going beyond autobiography, the authors discuss their craft and methods alongside observations on their evolution as artists. The interviews provide a close-up look at the personal and artistic differences, from T. Coraghessan Boyle’s self-aware hipness to Andre Dubus’s spiritual strength in the face of physical disability to Rick Bass’s commitment to environmental concerns. Richard Ford describes how he takes control over his own material while Gina Berriault, in a rare lengthy interview, speaks movingly about the “gaps and silences” in a woman writer’s life.

Interviews: Julia Alvarez, Rick Bass, Gina Berriault, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Andre Dubus, Richard Ford, Thom Jones, Bobbie Ann Mason, Leonard Michaels, Jayne Ann Phillips, Christopher Tilghman, Tobias Wolff
