About the Book

Located on the Mississippi River in southwestern Illinois, Nauvoo at its height was the second largest city in the state and the center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Robert Bruce Flanders’ classic history tells the story of the place and time behind what became a legend about a martyred prophet, a lost city, and religious persecution. A critical period in LDS history, the Nauvoo era (1839–1846) marked the last years of founder Joseph Smith and the start of Brigham Young’s career. It was in Nauvoo that the Church created the patterns of LDS society in the West and navigated the difficult question of succession after Smith’s murder.
