About the Book

Academic research across disciplines often treats communities as subjects rather than sources of knowledge. Jennifer Brier and Memoona Hasnain edit a collection that envisions a twenty-first century Chicago School grounded in interdisciplinary collaboration, reciprocity, and community-driven change.

Scholars, students, staff, healthcare professionals, and community partners draw on real-world examples to examine how the University of Illinois Chicago is pivoting to fulfill its public mission by focusing on social justice, health equity, and community collaboration. The essayists address issues ranging from historical inequities and curriculum reform to urban planning and the social determinants of health. As they show, universities and the wider public can team up to address structural racism, health disparities, and social inequities while fulfilling a vision of higher education that centers human dignity, shared knowledge, and collective action to build healthier and more just communities.

Multifaceted and innovative, A Chicago School for the 21st Century provides a blueprint for reshaping the university’s role in finding community-informed solutions to issues.
