The Only Journal Dedicated Exclusively to Lincoln Scholarship

"The Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association is the most important periodical in the field of Lincoln studies. As a Lincoln biographer, I rely on it heavily for both ideas and information. "
— David Herbert Donald, Harvard University

The Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association (JALA) is the only journal devoted exclusively to Lincoln scholarship. In addition to selected scholarly articles—on Lincoln in the popular media, for example, or British reactions to the War— the journal also features photographs and newly discovered Lincoln letters and other unpublished primary source documents. JALA is the official journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association.

Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association

The Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association welcomes manuscripts on any facet of the life of Abraham Lincoln, his family, his close associates, or his legacy. Manuscripts that illuminate the historical context in which Lincoln lived and worked and that examine economic, social, or cultural influences that were brought to bear on Lincoln and his contemporaries are also welcome, as are manuscripts that explore how Lincoln's reputation has fared over time in the collective memory of the nation and the world. Pertinent unpublished primary source materials are also welcome. Manuscripts should meet the professional standards of academic journals, make a significant contribution in fact or interpretation, and use primary sources as well as a broad range of relevant literature.

Authors should follow the Chicago Manual of Style in preparing manuscripts for the Journal. All manuscripts should be in 12-point type, double-spaced, and 20 to 25 pages in length exclusive of notes (although longer or shorter manuscripts are occasionally accepted). All manuscripts accepted for publication will be edited to conform to Journal style. Editors may make changes for clarity, consistency, and word economy. Authors are expected to review typescripts and galleys.

Photographs, maps, and other illustrations must be provided in high-quality, camera-ready form, or digitally in grayscale TIFF files at a resolution of at least 300 dpi. It is the responsibility of the author to obtain authorization from copyright holders for images reproduced in the Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association. All illustrations are reproduced in black-and-white.

Articles should be submitted electronically to the JALA online manuscript submission system. This secure, personalized resource will allow you to track your manuscript through each step of the review and acceptance process. To begin, click here to set up your personal account and upload your submission. Your transmitted material will be reviewed as soon as possible.
